S.T.A.R.S. is coming to San Jose on June 3, 2012
S.T.A.R.S. is a new system of off-ice fitness assessment and development designed to support U.S. Figure Skating's existing testing and competition progressions. Its development is based primarily on the need to promote robust, all-around fitness in young American skaters; to push and maintain the athletic ability curve ahead of the skills curve; to ensure that young figure skaters are physically prepared to handle the introduction of new, more complex and more demanding skating skills; and to reduce the potential for injury typically sustained during the training of these new skills.

Triple Gold Medalist
Allison Ann Bailey, a ten year member of Vaca Valley Figure Skating Club, reached her goal of becoming "Triple Gold" in January. Alli has completed and passed all of the Moves in the Field, Free Skating, and Gold Dance tests. Allison is the first member of the VVFSC to achieve this honor, and she did it with the added distinction of having passed every test she took on the first attempt. Allison credits her coaches for their support in helping her achieve this goal, including Holly Thompson, William Wong, Marisol Brilliant, Karin Freund, and Christopher Kinser.
Sad News
We are very saddened to announce the death of Howard Taylor, 93, who passed away suddenly at his home in Walnut Creek on Feb 5, 2012.
Howard was involved with skating for much of his life. He was a Singles, Pairs & Dance Judge and National Referee. He previously served on several committees for U.S. Figure Skating and was also recognized as an honorary member of U.S. Figure Skating's Executive Committee.
A St. Moritz ISC member for more than 50 years, Howard was a dedicated volunteer who served on the club's Board of Directors, including as its President. Over his many decades in support of the sport of figure skating, he helped organize local skating competitions and shows, as well as National and International events held in the Bay Area. Howard was also one of the original organizers of the Central California Interclub Association. His motto was "keep 'em skating!" and he remained supportive of skaters and skating activities for all levels. Howard will be missed by his skating family.
Howard Taylor was the beloved husband of Georgia, father of Donna, Georgia, Diana and Debra and brother of Don. Private funeral services will be held.
Skating 4 Life Update
In October, 2011, the first Skating 4 Life skating show was held in Stockton for the benefit of Megan Gleason, a skater who is undergoing treatment for cancer. Thanks to the organizing efforts of the Stockton Figure Skating Club, the performances of all the skaters, and the generous donations from attendees, approximately $7000 was raised.
News from the Gleason family is that Megan is doing well. She is approaching three months into remission as of January and her doctors are very excited with her recovery. She has returned to coaching Basic Skills in group lessons after being away for 6 months. As for her own skating, she is slowing reteaching herself to jump and has progressed back through double toe. Her family believes that being a dedicated figure skater taught her to be a survivor.
Megan was asked to be in a study with University of Minnesota through Children's Oncology Group. They are studying germ cell tumors in childhood and the factors that may contribute to their development. She gladly took part in the study and hopes that she can contribute to maybe someday finding a cure.
